A WORD ABOUT TUITION: Tuition is not calculated as an hourly fee for services rendered because teaching is more than the time spent with your student.  Tuition covers time spent with students, preparation time, teacher training and experience, recital costs and preparations, professional organization memberships, professional journals, studio expenses, property taxes, self-employment taxes, insurance, continuing education and certification costs.

PAYMENT:  Regular Season –There are 31 lessons scheduled during the regular season. The tuition schedule for this year will be $100.00 per month for a 30-minute lesson.  Monthly tuition is expected at the first lesson of each month (September through May) for that month’s lessons. A $5.00 late fee will be assessed on all payments received after this time. You will receive invoices each month for lesson fees and any additional fees from my account at Music Teachers Helper. Fees are charged by the month and are not lowered or refunded for missed lessons by the student.

     IMTA Festival - $25 for 20 min/$35 for 30 min/$50 for 45 min

     Federation Festival - $25

Summer Season – Payment of summer lessons should be made by the month based on the number of lessons the student expects to have.  Each 30-minute lesson will be $29.00 per week. A 35 minute lesson will be $33.80 per week. A 45 minute lesson will be $43.50 and a 60 minute lesson will be $58.00 per week.  Lessons will be continued as regularly as possible during June and July, allowing for the vacation plans of both student and teacher. Students need to schedule a minimum of 3 lessons during the summer session to retain their place for the fall.  If a student is unable to schedule three lessons during the summer a fee of $87.00 in lieu of 3 half hour lessons, $101.40 in lieu of 3 35 minute lessons. $130.50 in lieu of 3 45 minute lessons, and $174.00 in lieu of 3 hour lessons will retain the student’s lesson time for the fall.  This will be at the discretion of the teacher.

CANCELED LESSON: Regular Season – Please understand that the tuition you pay reserves an exclusive weekly time in my schedule for your child.  Unlike a doctor, or hairdresser, I cannot resell that time nor can I create extra teaching time in which to give lessons. Each student is expected to be present for every scheduled lesson.  There are no refunds made for missed lessons, however I will make up two lessons per year provided I have at least 24 hours advance notice (In the case of sickness I will accept shorter notice.)  These lessons will be made up during the specified make-up weeks.  A copy of my teaching schedule will be put in each student’s binder. If you have a conflict with a lesson please arrange to switch lessons with someone.  After arranging the change please call me, e-mail me, or leave a message on my answering machine so I know what the change in schedule will be.  These arrangements need to be made one week in advance.

The instructor may cancel up to one lesson during the regular season in the event of sickness or family emergency for which there will be no make-ups or refunds.  Any other lessons I cancel will be made-up.

Please be on time for lessons.  Lessons cannot be extended due to late arrivals.

When school is canceled due to snow or ice on the day of a piano lesson, students should plan on attending their lesson at the designated time.  Usually roads are cleared by the afternoon. If you are uncomfortable driving due to the weather, please plan to use one of your two make up days.

Summer Season– If for some reason your vacation plans change and you give me notification of a canceled lesson at least 24 hours before the time of your lesson, no charge will be made.  Without such notification, payment will be expected.

DISCONTINUATION OF LESSONS: Each student who registers for lessons in the fall makes a commitment for the entire school year.  Thus, termination of lessons is appropriate only at the end of the school year.  If an exception to this policy is necessary, a month’s notice (4 lessons) is required.

Students may be dismissed for any of the following reasons:  irregular lesson attendance, repeated failure to prepare for lessons, behavior or attitude problems, nonpayment of tuition or other expenses or failure to abide by policy statements.

MEDIA RELEASE: Photos of students and video and audio recordings of student performances may be posted online. Identifying information will be excluded or limited to first names only.  Parents wishing to exempt their students from any published media may do so by providing a written exclusion request.

PARKING:  Please park in the street as my husband will be using the driveway throughout the evening.

PRACTICE TIME:  This will be discussed with each individual student.  Usually I ask beginners to play through each assigned piece 3 times.  This should take about 20 minutes.  Students taking a half-hour lesson should expect to practice about 30 minutes each day.  Students taking a 45-minute lesson should practice about 45 minutes each day.   Students should be practicing at least 5 days each week.  Students will progress more quickly if they practice 30 minutes each day rather than trying to practice an hour 2 or 3 times each week.  Parents should plan to supervise home practice sessions for grade school students, making sure your child completes each assignment.  Many children are not disciplined enough yet to manage practicing without your support. If a student is not making progress due to lack of practice, lessons may be discontinued at the discretion of the teacher.

RECITAL AND FESTIVAL PARTICIPATION:  Recitals and other activities give students a chance to share what they are learning with family, friends, and other students.  These activities give students goals, which enable them to make greater progress.  It is expected that students participate in Federation Festival or IMTA Auditions as well as two recitals each year.  Other opportunities for performance are also available during the year and encouraged.

VISITORS AT LESSON:  I encourage the presence of a parent at every lesson, but would discourage the presence of siblings or a student’s friend.

MISCELLANEOUS:  Bring all music and binder with assignment sheets to each lesson.
Keep fingernails trimmed short for practice time and for the lesson time.  This is necessary for proper technique.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: I am an active member of the Music Teachers National Association, Iowa Music Teachers Association and the Federated Music Teachers Association.  All of these organizations provide wonderful learning opportunities for my students and me.  My educational background includes a high school diploma with honors from the Interlochen Arts Academy, a Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and over forty years of private and group piano instruction experience. I am a nationally certified teacher of music (NCTM).
